News: Some residents of the state of Texas have submitted a petition to secede from the Union. So far, the White House has not responded. There is no provision in the Constitution for states to secede, however the last time a state officially split, the Civil War followed.
Comment: These outcasts (I refer to the petition signers, not all residents of Texas), need to give it a rest. What they don’t consider is that, if (and it’s a big if) Texas were to split, anything going into the area — from clothes, to electronics, to groceries — would be an import, anything going out would be an export, and would be taxed as such.
Any resident who wanted to take a drive — even if it’s just to visit relatives in, say, Oklahoma — would have to show their passport. A traveler changing planes in Dallas would have to go through an additional security screening, since it would be considered an international flight.
This pipe dream crops up every few years. It’s never amounted to anything, and never will.
