News: The city of San Francisco will install steel suicide prevention nets along the Golden Gate Bridge. The $76 million project will be paid for in part by Federal funds.
Comment: Let me say up front that suicide is awful, and prevention should be a priority for any community. But it should begin well before an individual is standing on a bridge, contemplating a last jump.
I would much rather see taxpayer funds used for prevention programs and counseling for distressed individuals than this knee-jerk, last-ditch attempt that is nothing more than a thinly-veiled publicity stunt.
