People are saying that Steve Stephens got off easy. It’s just not the case.
The man who posted a Facebook live video of him killing an elderly man who was out for a stroll on Easter Sunday was found dead in his vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, following a brief police chase.
In a perfect world, Stephens’ victim would still be alive. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. So, by offing himself, Stephens saved the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Even if he were tried and got sentenced to death, he would have lived four decades before it was carried out, and even then — with the way things are going – probably would have had his punishment reduced to life in prison.
End the Cycle
Now, lawmakers can and should focus on preventing mentally-ill people from obtaining firearms, and expanding citizen personal safety programs so that a tragedy such as this will never happen again.
